In recent years the choice of credit card provider has also grown enormously, meaning that they are competing fiercely for your custom. Many offer excellent deals to tempt you away from your current credit card provider, for instance Capital One UK offer 0% interest for the first six months. Some offer up to 8 weeks interest free credit, so can be very useful to smooth your cash flow. Others also give you incentives, such as cash back and Air Miles. Others, such as Marbles, allow you to manage you account online.
Comparing Interest rates
If you do not intend to pay off your credit card bill in full each month you will need to consider the interest rates the various credit cards charge. Below are some important points to consider:
Introductory Rate
To attract new customers many credit card companies are offering attractive, low rates for several months after you join. Capital One UK offer a 0% rate for the first 6 months on new purchases.
Normal Interest Rate
Once the introductory period is over you will revert to their usual interest rate. The Annual Percentage Rate (or APR) can vary enormously so make sure you check this.
Interest Free Period
Most cards provide you with interest free credit for a number of weeks. You should find out how long this is for.
Cash Withdrawals
The interest rates charged for cash withdrawals can be high with some credit cards, so ensure you check this if you intend to use your credit card to withdraw cash.
